On a tragic evening in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of 12-year-old Zyion Charles was cut short by gunfire. The incident unfolded on November 26, 2022, on the 17th Street Bridge near Atlantic Station. Another teenager, 15-year-old Cameron Jackson, was also killed in the shooting, which injured four other youths.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting began when a group of teenagers, including Charles and Jackson, were escorted off the Atlantic Station property by security for unruly
behavior and violating the curfew. The group then moved to the nearby bridge, where a dispute escalated into a deadly shooting. Atlanta police later stated their belief that the shooting was gang-related and that Cameron Jackson was the intended target, with Zyion Charles likely being an unintended victim caught in the crossfire. Zyion died at the scene, while Cameron passed away from his injuries in the hospital three days later.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators identified and arrested six teenage suspects. They were identified as Derodney Russell, Antonio Jackson, A'Micael Aziz, Toney Wilson, Demetrius Hill, and DeAndre Forston. All six were charged as adults with offenses that included murder, aggravated assault, and violation of the street gang terrorism and prevention act. Authorities alleged the suspects were associated with the 'Fast Money Killers' gang. Surveillance footage reportedly captured some of the suspects appearing to celebrate after the shooting as they boarded a MARTA train.
The legal process saw several of the defendants enter into plea agreements. A'Micael Aziz, who was 17 at the time, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing another person to become a member of a street gang and was sentenced to ten years, with five to be served in prison. Demetrius Hill, who prosecutors believe fired the shot that killed Cameron Jackson, was sentenced to 40 years, with 30 to be served in prison. Toney Wilson received a sentence of 40 years with 20 to serve, while Antonio Jackson was sentenced to 20 years with 10 to serve. The mothers of both victims were present for the court proceedings, expressing the profound pain and loss their families have endured.
