In the early morning hours of October 13, 2022, Christopher Eberhart, a 57-year-old man from Gainesville, Georgia, sat in his GMC Sierra pickup truck in a driveway in an upscale Buckhead neighborhood. A contractor by trade, he was waiting to begin work on a nearby construction project. Tragically, he was confronted by an individual who shot him multiple times before stealing his truck and fleeing the scene.
A mother driving her young daughter to school later discovered Eberhart's body
lying motionless in the driveway of a vacant lot. Atlanta police were called to the scene on Peachtree Battle Drive, and an investigation into the homicide began. Initially, authorities had no suspects and were unclear on the motive, as Eberhart was not from the immediate area.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, 18-year-old Travis Landrey. Investigators believe Landrey and another individual, identified as Espree, had traveled to the Atlanta area from Louisiana. On the morning of the murder, Landrey encountered Eberhart in his truck. Following the fatal shooting and carjacking, Landrey and Espree were later spotted by police. After a brief chase, Landrey managed to escape and eventually made his way to Alabama.
Authorities in Alabama located and arrested Landrey. He was found in possession of Eberhart's stolen truck. Landrey was subsequently charged with murder, felony murder, hijacking a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Espree, who was hospitalized at the time of the murder, was not charged in connection with Eberhart's death but did face a charge of theft by receiving stolen property.
