In the quiet early morning hours of September 11, 2016, in Cleveland, Mississippi, Meae Song Mosley, a 51-year-old female of South Korean descent, was found shot and killed as she rested on a couch in her trailer. The tragic discovery was made by her son, Michael Mosley, who claimed to have just returned home from a party. He told investigators that he found his mother's room ransacked before finding her deceased, at which point he called 911. At the time of the incident, Meae's husband and Michael's father, Donald Mosley, was hospitalized due to cancer.
The investigation into Meae Mosley's death initially faced the challenge of having no direct witnesses to the shooting. Michael Mosley suggested to law enforcement that 'drug heads' in the area might have been responsible and may have used his mother's own gun in the commission of the crime, which he claimed was then stolen. However, as the investigation progressed, the evidence began to point investigators in a different direction, leading them to suspect her own son.
A significant breakthrough in the case came a year after the murder when a plastic bag was discovered by a local resident.
