Bailiff Ed Battle, a law enforcement officer with the Fulton County Office of Inspector of Roads and Bridges in Atlanta, Georgia, was tragically killed on May 17, 1902. The incident occurred while Bailiff Battle, along with Policeman Hugh Osburn and Officers Tom Grant and Edward Crabtree of the Atlanta Police Department, attempted to arrest a gang of criminals.
