On August 6, 2023, at approximately 11 p.m., Kansas City police responded to reports of a shooting along northbound U.S. 71 Highway near 22nd Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle stopped on the side of the highway with two teenage occupants, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were promptly transported to a local hospital, where 15-year-old Diego Alexandera Almeda was pronounced dead. The second victim, an unidentified teenage male, remained in critical condition.
