On August 30, 2020, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 35-year-old Andrew Ian Dickie was found fatally wounded in his home's garage. Originally from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Dickie was a technician who had lived in the area for several years and was known for his passion for motorcycles. Police were dispatched to the residence in the 4900 block of The Paseo around 5:30 p.m. after ShotSpotter sensors detected the sound of multiple gunshots in the neighborhood.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Dickie unresponsive with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators relied on surveillance footage and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the homicide. The video captured a yellow Chevrolet Camaro pulling into the driveway of the home shortly before the shooting. Two men were seen exiting the vehicle and engaging in a brief interaction with the victim. The situation escalated quickly, and the surveillance footage allegedly showed one of the suspects retrieving a long gun from the car and pointing it toward the garage. The audio sensors in the area recorded two distinct firearms being discharged simultaneously, suggesting multiple shooters or an exchange of gunfire.
Following the release of details regarding the vehicle and the suspects, police identified 38-year-old Darryl K. Price as a primary suspect. Authorities linked Price to the crime scene through social media posts where he was seen wearing the same clothing observed in the surveillance video. During questioning, Price reportedly admitted to being present at the scene and acknowledged exiting the passenger side of the Camaro with a rifle. However, he claimed that while he pointed the weapon at the garage, a second individual was responsible for firing the fatal shots.
In early September 2020, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Darryl Price with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Dickie’s death. Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000, citing the video evidence and Price’s own admissions placing him at the scene with a weapon. At the time of the initial charging, detectives continued to investigate the identity and role of the second suspect mentioned in witness accounts and Price’s statement.
