On the afternoon of July 13, 2022, tragedy struck the Willow Creek Apartments in the south section of Kansas City, Missouri. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of West 100th Terrace around 3:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting within the gated community. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered 19-year-old Black male Devin Cunningham inside one of the residential units, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts attempted by officers and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical personnel, he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation at the apartment complex appeared to move quickly, with police detaining several individuals at the scene for questioning. At the time, a department spokesperson indicated that detectives were not actively searching for additional suspects, suggesting that the parties involved were accounted for. The crime scene was described as being mostly contained to the single apartment where the victim was found. However, despite these early detentions and the interviews conducted with those in custody to determine the events leading up to the gunfire, no immediate charges for murder were publicly announced in the days following the incident.
Nearly two years after the shooting, the case remained a source of pain and advocacy for the family. By February 2024, reports indicated that the murder of Devin Cunningham had not been solved, leaving his loved ones to seek justice through community activism. His grandmother, Brenda Crenshaw, became a vocal figure in local anti-violence organizations, channeling her grief into efforts to support other families affected by gun violence and to push for safer communities in the Kansas City area.
