The tragic death of 24-year-old Cardell I. Crawford occurred late on the night of July 10, 2022, in the Westport entertainment district of Kansas City, Missouri. Cardell, a male father of one who worked at a Ford assembly line, was enjoying an evening out when chaos erupted outside the Westport Ale House near Broadway Boulevard. What began as a disturbance inside the venue spilled out onto the street around 11 p.m., escalating rapidly into a dangerous exchange of gunfire involving multiple
individuals and off-duty police officers working security. In the ensuing mayhem, Cardell was fatally struck by a bullet while attempting to lead his friends to safety.
Authorities later identified 21-year-old Lavont A. Carter as the primary suspect who allegedly initiated the violence. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed Carter raising a weapon and firing toward a group near a vehicle, setting off a chain reaction of gunfire that injured five others and claimed Cardell's life. Although it was initially unclear whose bullet struck the victim during the chaotic shootout, prosecutors determined that Carter's actions were the catalyst for the deadly event.
In January 2023, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office formally announced charges against Carter, including second-degree felony murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and second-degree assault. The felony murder charge was applied because the underlying felony of unlawfully using a weapon directly resulted in Cardell's death. Following the incident, Cardell's family, including his sister Camille, expressed their devastation, describing him as a loyal protector and a 'beautiful soul' whose death was unexpected and undeserved. They emphasized that he was not involved in the initial altercation but was merely a bystander caught in the crossfire while trying to protect his loved ones.
