In the late evening hours of November 1, 2021, in Athens, Georgia, the life of 21-year-old Demetrius Laralpheal Pope was tragically cut short. An African American male, Pope was in the 200 block of Martin Circle when he was struck by gunfire. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department received a call about the shooting at approximately 10:54 PM. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Pope suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Demetrius Pope was immediately classified as a homicide. Detectives began to piece together the events of that night, learning from a witness that a dark-colored sedan of an unknown make and model had driven by the location. An occupant of the vehicle reportedly began shooting, striking Pope. The motive for the shooting remains unclear to investigators. Interestingly, this was not the first time Pope's residence had been targeted. About a week prior, on October 26, 2021, at around 3:06 AM, shots were fired at the house while Pope and a 51-year-old woman were inside. Neither was harmed in the earlier incident, and both denied knowing anyone who would want to harm them. Police recovered 15 shell casings of two different calibers from the street after the first shooting.
Despite the ongoing efforts of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Demetrius Laralpheal Pope. The case is now considered a cold case, and a reward has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for his death.
