In the late hours of a spring night in Athens, Georgia, the life of 18-year-old Jordorian 'Jojo' Randolph was tragically cut short. Just before 1 a.m. on a Friday in May 2014, police responded to a call on Westchester Circle. There, tucked behind some hedges near a home, they found Randolph suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate aid rendered by the responding officers and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical services, the young man succumbed to his injuries.
The
investigation that followed painted a grim picture of gang-related violence. Authorities determined that Randolph, who was associated with the 'Never Broke Again' street gang, was the victim of a drive-by shooting. The incident was a violent manifestation of an ongoing and bitter rivalry with the '2Tuff' street gang. The shooting was not an isolated event but rather a flashpoint in a series of retaliatory acts that had plagued the community. In the weeks following Randolph's death, the cycle of violence continued with another drive-by shooting, this time targeting members of the 2Tuff gang, leaving three individuals wounded.
An arrest was eventually made in connection with Randolph's death. Tyrique Tittrous Watson, a member of the rival 2Tuff gang, was identified as the driver of the vehicle from which the fatal shot was fired by a fellow gang member using an assault-style rifle. In a subsequent legal proceeding in 2016, Watson entered into a plea agreement. In exchange for his guilty plea to a charge of aggravated assault, the more severe murder charges against him were dismissed. He received a sentence of five years of incarceration followed by 15 years of probation. Even after his release, Watson's legal troubles continued, as he was later arrested on unrelated drug and weapons charges while still on probation for his role in the death of Jordorian Randolph.
