In the early evening of Saturday, February 2, 2019, tragedy struck at the Regency Park Apartments on Sycamore Drive in Athens, Georgia, when 24-year-old Ramonte Harris was fatally shot. The incident, which occurred around 5:00 p.m., stemmed from a dispute that escalated into deadly violence. Following the shooting, Harris was transported to a local hospital by a private vehicle, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities were quick to respond, and based on witness
descriptions of a vehicle leaving the scene, they located a suspect at a shopping center on Alps Road. The individual, identified as 21-year-old Darrall Christopher Early of Athens, was taken into custody for questioning and was subsequently charged with murder. The investigation that followed revealed that Harris and Early, who were described as best friends and lived in the same apartment complex, had been involved in an argument prior to the shooting. Detectives initially explored whether the homicide was gang-related, as Harris was a known member of the 'Never Broke Again' street gang, but they later concluded that this was not the case.
The motive for the fatal encounter was determined to be a dispute related to a drug sale, according to detectives. However, during legal proceedings, the acting District Attorney stated that Early claimed the argument was centered on Harris's drug use and its effects on him, not a drug deal between the two men. Toxicology reports did confirm that Harris had been using various controlled substances. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Early fled the scene, discarded the murder weapon, which was never recovered, and changed his clothes in an attempt to evade capture. He initially denied his involvement to the police before later claiming self-defense.
In March 2020, a Clarke County jury found Darrall Christopher Early, then 22, guilty of felony murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted first offender probationer. The following July, a Superior Court Judge sentenced Early to life in prison for the murder of his best friend. The tragic and senseless death of Ramonte Harris left behind a grieving family, including two young children.
