In the winter of 2023, a violent encounter in Athens, Georgia, resulted in the tragic death of 20-year-old Hugo Martinez-Cerritos. On the night of Friday, December 1st, Martinez-Cerritos and 26-year-old Juliana Navarnete-Moreno arrived at a residence on Massey Lane. There, they were confronted by 31-year-old Mangell Maivena, Navarnete-Moreno's ex-boyfriend.
A dispute broke out between the three, which tragically escalated to gunfire.
Maivena shot both Martinez-Cerritos and Navarnete-Moreno before turning the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene. Navarnete-Moreno also died at the scene from her injuries. Martinez-Cerritos was critically wounded and rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Hugo Martinez-Cerritos succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department investigated the incident, concluding that it was a double-murder suicide stemming from a domestic dispute. As the suspect, Mangell Maivena, died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Hugo Martinez-Cerritos and Juliana Navarnete-Moreno.
