In the late hours of Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, the life of 20-year-old Cameron Manago, a Black male from Athens, Georgia, was tragically cut short. The fatal incident unfolded at approximately 10:25 p.m. at the Rolling Ridge Apartments. Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a call of a shooting and, upon arrival, discovered Manago with a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting suggested that it occurred during an attempted armed robbery. The day after the incident, authorities made their first arrest, taking 16-year-old Zyquavious Thomas of Athens into custody. Despite his age, it was determined that Thomas would be charged as an adult. He faced a series of serious charges, including felony murder, attempted armed robbery, and aggravated assault.
As the investigation continued, a second suspect was identified and apprehended in June. Janiya Moore, an 18-year-old from Athens, was arrested and charged with felony murder and tampering with evidence in connection with Manago's death. The case saw a third arrest in October when 15-year-old Keanthony Sorrells was taken into custody. Sorrells faced a litany of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, and gang violence. He is also being charged as an adult.
In November 2024, the Georgia Attorney General's Office announced that Zyquavious Thomas and Keanthony Sorrells had been indicted for the murder of Cameron Manago. The indictment further alleged that both Thomas and Sorrells were members of the Sex Money Murder gang, a set of the national Bloods gang. The charges against Thomas and Sorrells included murder, felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Janiya Moore was also indicted on drug charges.
