On May 26, 2021, a domestic dispute in Brookhaven, Mississippi, ended in a tragic murder-suicide. Felicia Elmore, a 39-year-old Black female, was shot and killed by 38-year-old Joseph Parker. The incident unfolded inside a vehicle on Amite Road as the two were reportedly on their way to the home of Parker's mother.
According to the Brookhaven Police Chief, an argument broke out between Elmore and Parker.
As Elmore attempted to get out of the passenger side of the vehicle, Parker shot her multiple times with a 9mm pistol. After shooting Elmore, Parker then walked around the car to where she lay on the pavement and turned the gun on himself, sustaining a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Police were called to the scene after reports of gunshots were made. Upon their arrival, they discovered both Elmore and Parker deceased. The Lincoln County Deputy Coroner pronounced both individuals dead at the scene at 10:08 a.m. The investigation conducted by the Brookhaven Police Department concluded that the event was a murder-suicide stemming from a domestic altercation. As the sole suspect in Elmore's death, Joseph Parker, died at the scene, no arrests were made, and authorities consider the case closed. It was reported that Elmore and Parker shared a child. In the days following the incident, community members organized prayer vigils to honor the memory of both individuals and to support their grieving families.
