In the late hours of a Saturday, on July 1, 2023, the sound of gunshots shattered the evening peace at the Brookwood Apartments on South Railroad Avenue in Brookhaven, Mississippi. When police responded at approximately 10:56 p.m., they discovered a grim scene. Inside one of the apartments, 28-year-old Shanecia Ferdinand, a Black female, and her 30-year-old brother, LaDarius Rockingham, had been fatally shot. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Shanecia was pregnant, and her unborn child also perished in the violent act.
The incident was described by authorities as domestic in nature. In the immediate aftermath, a suspect was identified as 21-year-old Kelvin White. He had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. However, his freedom was short-lived. A little while later, with the assistance of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Kelvin White was located and taken into custody in the county. His arrest occurred on his birthday.
Following his arrest, Kelvin White was initially charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of first-degree murder, and he was held without bond. In a subsequent court appearance on July 12, 2023, these charges were amended. The charges were changed to three counts of first-degree murder, and a bond was set at $500,000 for each count. The investigation into the triple homicide is ongoing.
