In the summer of 2015, Bridget Hall, a 43-year-old Black female, was a beloved mother of four and a well-known peacemaker in her Brookhaven, Mississippi community. Her life was tragically cut short on the night of July 6th, when she was fatally shot multiple times at close range after answering a knock at her door on Vivian Merritt Street. The brutal act was carried out in the presence of two of her children who were inside the home at the time.
Her oldest daughter was in the driveway and her oldest son had just left for work.
In a cruel twist of irony, at the time of her death, Hall was actively involved in organizing a 'Stop the Violence' event to combat a recent rise in crime in her community. Her death sent shockwaves through Brookhaven, where she was remembered for her kind heart, her involvement in community events, and a heavenly singing voice that often graced local weddings. A high school homecoming queen and cheerleader, she had attended Jackson State University on a singing scholarship before becoming a phlebotomist.
The investigation into Hall's murder quickly focused on a potential connection to another homicide that had occurred just one day prior. On July 5, 2015, a 25-year-old man named Kelcay Anthony Humphrey was shot and killed. The man arrested for Humphrey's murder was Claudis D. Montgomery, whose brother, Claude Montgomery, was Bridget Hall's boyfriend at the time of her death. This connection led Hall's family and law enforcement to believe that her murder was an act of retaliation for Humphrey's death. Her family suspects she may have been targeted to prevent her from speaking about the other murder.
Despite the strong theory of motive, no one has ever been arrested or charged in connection with Bridget Hall's murder. Claudis D. Montgomery, the man arrested for the preceding murder, was later released after a grand jury declined to indict him. Years have passed, and Hall's case has grown cold, leaving her family and community still searching for answers and justice.
