In the early hours of March 13, 2015, a quiet street in Brookhaven, Mississippi, became the scene of a horrific act of violence that claimed the life of 9-year-old Jamiyah Sims. A dispute within her home escalated, resulting in a shooting that would also kill her father, 31-year-old Jermaine Sims. The young girl, her father, her mother, and two siblings were all shot by a man who was living with them.
The events unfolded around 12:20 a.m.
when Brookhaven police received a call about an injured woman in the road. When officers arrived, they found Jamiyah's mother, Victoria Sims, with a gunshot wound to the chest. With her were two of her other children, a 14-year-old daughter who had been shot in the chest and arm, and a 6-year-old son who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Inside the family's home on South First Street, police discovered Jermaine Sims and Jamiyah, both of whom had also been shot. Jamiyah and her father were rushed to a hospital in Jackson, but they succumbed to their injuries later that morning.
The suspect, 32-year-old Jimmy Lyons, was taken into custody at the scene. An investigation suggested that the shooting was not the result of a sudden altercation but stemmed from a conversation earlier in the day that Lyons had reportedly been dwelling on. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Jamiyah and her father, and three counts of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by her mother and two siblings.
Lyons was being held at the Lincoln County jail, awaiting a grand jury hearing. However, on the morning of May 30, 2015, he was found unresponsive in his cell. He was transported to a local medical center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was ordered, but no obvious cause of death was immediately identified, and there were no signs of trauma. Lyons's death brought an unexpected end to the legal proceedings in the tragic case of Jamiyah Sims and her family.
