On the evening of Wednesday, March 6, 2024, a seventeen-year-old Hispanic male named Carlos Gonzalez spent time at his home in Kansas City, Kansas, enjoying dinner with his sister who had raised him following the loss of their mother years earlier. Around 11 p.m., he left the residence to hang out with his close friend, nineteen-year-old Kalob Ruth, a routine that was common for the two who had grown up together.
His family expected him to stay the night at his friend's house, but concern grew the following day when calls to his phone went unanswered.
In the early morning hours of Thursday, March 7, 2024, tragedy struck in a wooded area of Kansas City, Missouri. Unknown circumstances led to a shooting that critically wounded both teenagers. Rather than an ambulance arriving at the scene, the two victims were transported by a private vehicle to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Police officers were dispatched to the hospital around 12:45 a.m. after receiving reports of the victims' arrival. Despite emergency medical attention, both Gonzalez and Ruth were pronounced dead shortly after reaching the facility.
