In Kansas City, Missouri, on the afternoon of November 25, 2023, a 16-year-old Black male named Derrick White, Jr. was fatally shot. The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. inside a residence in the 3200 block of Park Avenue. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Derrick unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were quickly investigated by the Kansas
City Police Department. Investigators came to believe that the shooting was accidental. In connection with the fatal shooting, authorities identified a juvenile as a person of interest and subsequently took them into custody for further questioning. The investigation pointed to the death being the result of an accidental shooting, and a juvenile suspect was taken into custody.
Tragically, this was not the first time the White family had been struck by gun violence. Derrick's father, Derrick White Sr., was the victim of a homicide in April 2019, also in Kansas City. The death of young Derrick was recorded as the 173rd homicide in Kansas City for the year 2023.
