Early in the morning on Thursday, July 25, 2024, police officers in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to a residence in the East Community Team South neighborhood following reports of a shooting. The incident occurred just after midnight in the 2400 block of Brighton Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders discovered an unresponsive individual lying outside the home.
Emergency medical personnel assessed the victim at the scene, but he had already succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.
The victim was identified as Anthony Lewis, a 52-year-old Black male, who had been inside the residence prior to the violence. Homicide detectives determined through their preliminary investigation that Lewis had been involved in a disturbance or interaction with another individual inside the house. This encounter quickly escalated into a physical altercation that resulted in gunfire, striking Lewis. Although the shooting took place indoors, he was found collapsed on the property's exterior.
Law enforcement officials were able to develop leads quickly at the scene which directed them to a separate location where they located a person of interest. Police took this subject into custody for further questioning regarding their involvement in the fatal event. While the individual was detained pending further investigation, authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name or announce specific charges in the initial aftermath of the homicide, which marked the city's 84th of the year.
