On August 24, 2016, a violent altercation took place at a convenience store in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of Rockey Louis Bradley Sr., a 56-year-old Black male known to friends and family as 'Redman.' The incident began inside a gas station located near 27th Street and Indiana Avenue, where Bradley encountered 30-year-old Terrance L. Blanks. The two men, who appeared to be strangers to one another, engaged in a heated verbal argument within the business.
Witnesses later reported that Blanks appeared agitated during the exchange, keeping his hand inside his hooded jacket as the confrontation escalated.
Following the initial dispute, Bradley exited the store and retreated to his truck parked outside. Blanks followed him into the parking lot, drawing a handgun as he approached the vehicle. Surveillance footage and witness accounts detailed how Blanks fired multiple shots at Bradley while he sat in the driver's seat. Bradley attempted to defend himself by retrieving his own firearm and returning fire, but he sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange. Blanks, who was struck in the arm by gunfire, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Bradley was later pronounced dead at Truman Medical Center, leaving behind a large family that included ten children.
Law enforcement officers quickly launched an investigation, utilizing surveillance video and witness testimony to identify the shooter. Blanks was located at a hospital where he had sought treatment for his gunshot wound, initially providing a false name to medical staff. Police connected him to the crime scene, and prosecutors subsequently charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the legal proceedings, the defense faced hurdles, including the admission by a witness that she had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the shooting, yet the physical and video evidence remained central to the prosecution's case.
The case concluded in January 2018 when a Jackson County jury found Blanks guilty of the charges brought against him. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced him in September of that same year, adhering to the jury's recommendation. Terrance Blanks received a total sentence of 30 years in a Missouri state prison, consisting of consecutive terms of 20 years for second-degree murder and 10 years for armed criminal action, effectively closing the legal chapter on the tragic death of Rockey Bradley.
