On August 7, 2022, 18-year-old Jabari Ellis, a male resident of the Kansas City area, was involved in a fatal incident that took place in the suburb of Raytown, Missouri. The events unfolded on a Sunday afternoon near a gas station located in the 8100 block of East 87th Street. Authorities were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire, where they discovered a chaotic situation that had left two young men with life-threatening injuries.
While one of the individuals was pronounced deceased at the scene, Ellis was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that the violence stemmed from a planned transaction involving a firearm. According to detectives, Ellis and another 18-year-old named Xaivon McKinzey, along with a third associate, had arranged to meet a man at the gas station to sell him a gun. The buyer later told police that he had agreed to purchase an AR-15 style rifle from the group for $450. He withdrew the cash from an ATM inside the store and met the teens in the parking lot to complete the exchange. However, the situation escalated when, according to the man's account to law enforcement, the transaction turned into an attempted robbery.
The man alleged that after he placed the purchased weapon into his trunk, he turned around to find Ellis pressing a rifle into his chest. Fearing for his life, the man swatted the weapon away, drew a concealed handgun from his holster, and opened fire on the group. He admitted to shooting both McKinzey and Ellis, stating that Ellis appeared to be pointing a gun at him even after falling to the ground. Following the shooting, the man left the scene and returned to his home in Kansas City, where he secured the weapons before having a friend drive him to a police station to turn himself in. He claimed he acted in self-defense, and after being interviewed by investigators, he was released without immediate charges.
While the shooter was not initially charged, prosecutors did file charges against the surviving member of the group, 18-year-old Darius Williams. Williams was accused of armed criminal action and attempted robbery for his alleged role as an accomplice in the scheme that led to the deaths of his friends. Court records indicated that a witness who drove the three teens to the store told police that the group had hatched a plan to rob the buyer during the sale. Williams was held on bond as the legal proceedings commenced, while the families of Ellis and McKinzey were left to mourn the loss of the two teenagers.
