On the evening of April 19, 2019, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 27-year-old Maurice Jennings was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the 3400 block of Olive Street near Prospect Avenue. Officers patrolling nearby heard the sound of gunfire around 8:30 p.m. and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the male victim lying in the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's 42nd homicide of the year.
Just days prior to the shooting, Jennings had been released from custody. He had been incarcerated pending a first-degree burglary charge which stemmed from a domestic dispute involving the throwing of a chair. After pleading guilty to the charge, he was sentenced to probation and ordered to complete an anger management program. He had been out of jail for approximately one week before his life was cut short. His family, including his mother Andrea Lewis, had expressed relief at his release, hoping he was on a path to getting his life together for his four children.
Following the shooting, homicide detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding Jennings' death.
