On the early morning of March 4, 2020, 35-year-old Deandre Magice was fatally shot while walking in Kansas City, Missouri. The incident occurred near the intersection of 10th Street and Brooklyn Avenue. Police officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Magice lying in the street, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives reviewed video surveillance footage from the vicinity to reconstruct the events
leading up to the shooting. The video showed Magice walking south on Brooklyn Avenue when two individuals emerged from the darkness near 10th Street. Both figures were dressed in hooded sweatshirts. The footage captured the suspects running toward Magice before opening fire. After the shooting, the two individuals fled the scene, running south and then turning west onto 11th Street toward Euclid Avenue.
Following the investigation, police identified two teenagers as suspects: 17-year-old Somoan Harter and 18-year-old Kyu Jackson. A search warrant was executed at a residence near 11th and Euclid, where officers located both suspects along with other individuals. During the search, law enforcement recovered a handgun, ammunition, and hoodies that matched the descriptions provided by witnesses and observed in the surveillance video.
Both Harter and Jackson were taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court documents revealed that while both individuals admitted to being the subjects involved, they provided conflicting accounts regarding the actual shooting. Harter told investigators that Jackson was the one who pulled the trigger, an accusation that Jackson denied. Further investigation indicated that the violence may have been linked to local gang tensions, with records suggesting both suspects were involved with a 12th Street gang that was a rival to a group on 33rd Street. Jackson also admitted to involvement in several other robberies in the area. Prosecutors requested a $100,000 cash-only bond for the suspects, citing the danger they posed to the community.
