On the evening of January 6, 2019, tragedy struck on the 3800 block of Wabash Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Arkests Raymon Grant, a 17-year-old Black male, was outside his residence when he was fatally wounded. Reports indicate that Grant had been engaging in a transaction involving the sale of marijuana and was expecting to meet a female acquaintance. Instead, witnesses observed a male teenager approach him on foot.
Shortly thereafter, gunshots rang out, and the assailant was seen fleeing the scene. Emergency responders arrived to find Grant unresponsive on the sidewalk, where he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds.
Investigators quickly pieced together the events leading up to the homicide by analyzing the victim's digital footprint. A search of Grant’s phone revealed a series of electronic messages exchanged between him and another teenager, 17-year-old Joshua B. Gaston. These communications helped law enforcement identify Gaston as a person of interest. Further forensic analysis provided crucial physical evidence; genetic material recovered from a spent shell casing discovered at the crime scene matched Gaston’s DNA profile, solidifying the connection between the suspect and the shooting.
Following the investigation, authorities located and arrested Joshua B. Gaston. During questioning, Gaston admitted to shooting Grant but attempted to deflect sole responsibility by claiming an unknown man armed with a gun had been nearby at the time of the incident. Despite this claim, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged Gaston with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The case underscored the lethal consequences of youth violence in the community, with prosecutors requesting a substantial cash bond as the legal proceedings commenced.
