In the chill of a Thursday evening in Kansas City, Missouri, on November 16, 2023, the life of 17-year-old DeMarcus Anthony Houston Jr. was tragically cut short by gunfire. The shooting, which also claimed the life of his 26-year-old brother, Marquise L. Rose, unfolded in the bustling environment of the Blue Ridge Crossing shopping center, near 42nd Street and Sterling Avenue.
A third individual was also wounded in the incident but was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to survive.
First responders were called to the scene just before 9:30 p.m. following reports of the shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene with two of the victims located in separate parking lots, approximately 200 yards from each other. DeMarcus was pronounced deceased at the scene, while his brother Marquise was rushed to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The male victim was a senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High school and was set to graduate with the class of 2024.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement authorities began an investigation into the double homicide.
