On the evening of September 24, 2020, a violent and tragic sequence of events unfolded at a convenience store and gas station in the North City area of St. Louis, Missouri. Marvailes Emory, a 34-year-old male, had stopped at the establishment near downtown to purchase a snack. While inside, a dispute reportedly arose between Emory and the store’s employees regarding a disposable surgical mask. The argument quickly escalated, drawing the attention of a group of men who were loitering outside the business.
As the situation intensified, the individuals outside, who were described as a large group, brandished firearms, including pistols and assault weapons. During the confrontation, Emory was struck with the barrel of an assault rifle. Despite his attempts to defend himself with his hands, he was forcibly thrown out of the store. Once outside, the armed men opened fire, shooting him multiple times. Emory collapsed on the pavement and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Reports indicated that no one from the business emerged to render aid during the attack.
Following the murder, the victim's family, including his mother and four children, pursued legal action against the gas station for negligence.
