Dejuan Henderson, known to his friends and family as a dedicated father and husband, was a long-time resident of Kansas City who had graduated from Ruskin Senior High School. He worked as a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service, where colleagues noted his strong work ethic and resemblance to his older brother, earning them a nickname within their postal community. He was remembered as a spiritual man who valued health and family, leaving behind a wife and children. His death came as a shock to his loved ones, who described him as a man of principle and honor.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators struggled to identify a suspect. Police spokesperson Captain Leslie Foreman stated at the time that there was no suspect information available to release to the public. The case was subsequently listed among the metro area's unsolved homicides for that year by local advocacy groups.
