In the early evening of October 12, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at O'Donnell Park in Grandview, Missouri, leaving a devastating outcome. When officers from the Grandview Police Department arrived at the scene around 5:20 p.m., they discovered two men who had been shot. One of them, 34-year-old Orson 'Treyce' Roth III, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, who was with Roth, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Witnesses at the park reported seeing two men fleeing the area immediately after the shots were fired. The tragic event prompted a significant law enforcement response, with the Kansas City Police Department deploying a helicopter to aid in the search for the individuals seen running from the park. Despite the extensive search of the surrounding area, the suspects managed to elude capture. The Lee's Summit Police Department, along with the Jackson and Cass County sheriff's offices, also provided assistance in the investigation into the fatal shooting.
In the days that followed, the friend who was with Orson Roth and survived the ambush, despite being shot eight times, spoke out about the terrifying experience. As of late October 2022, the Grandview police had not made any arrests in connection with the homicide. Investigators continued to seek information from the public, urging anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward to help bring those responsible for Orson Roth's death to justice. The shooting marked the first homicide in Grandview for that year.
