Jaylen T. Blackmon, a 20-year-old Black man from Kansas City, was fatally shot on the evening of Sunday, December 22, 2019, in Grandview, Missouri. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. in the 13200 block of Overhill Road, where responding officers discovered Blackmon deceased on a sidewalk from a gunshot wound.
According to witnesses at the scene, the shooting stemmed from an altercation related to a transaction for a pair of shoes.
Blackmon's family elaborated that he and his girlfriend had arranged to meet a teenage boy to purchase the shoes. The family stated that Blackmon suspected the shoes might be counterfeit. When he attempted to get his money back, the situation escalated, and the boy allegedly shot and killed him. His family described his death as a "senseless murder."
In the days following the shooting, the Grandview Police Department actively investigated the case but had not made any arrests. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the TIPS Hotline. A GoFundMe page was established by Blackmon's family to assist with funeral expenses, raising nearly $6,000. Family members remembered him as a "beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle, boyfriend, friend and so much more" who loved cars, basketball, and music. They described him as a "complete goofball" who could light up a room.
As of the latest available online reports, no arrests have been publicly announced, and no suspects have been officially named in connection with the death of Jaylen Blackmon. The investigation into his homicide remains ongoing.
