In the winter of 2022, a tragedy unfolded in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood of St. Louis, forever altering the lives of two families. On the evening of December 3rd, police responded to a call of a shooting on Northland Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of 14-year-old Jacob Ashford on a porch. The young male had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The senseless act of violence cut short a young life and left a community searching for answers.
The investigation into Jacob's death quickly pointed to a motive rooted in retribution. The day prior to Jacob's murder, the son of Louzell Davis Jr. was killed during an attempted car theft that he was allegedly committing with Jacob. In an act of retaliatory violence, Davis went to the home where Jacob was, took him to the front porch, and shot him multiple times. Witnesses at the scene identified Davis as the shooter, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Loutrell Davis Jr. was initially charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death of Jacob Ashford. However, in a plea deal, the charge was reduced to second-degree murder and armed criminal action. In exchange for his guilty plea, Davis was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the sentencing, Jacob's father expressed his profound grief and stated that he did not believe the 20-year sentence was sufficient for the man who took his son's life. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney remarked on the tragic nature of the case, noting that the killing of the teenager would not bring back Davis's son but only perpetuate a cycle of violence and pain for another family.
