On the morning of July 15, 2022, tragedy struck in the Kingsway East neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri. At approximately 7:45 a.m., police officers responded to a call in the 4800 block of Leduc Street, located a few blocks east of Kingshighway Boulevard. Upon arrival, they discovered a 38-year-old male, Shaun Hunt, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his right side. Despite the efforts of first responders, Hunt was found in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries. Investigators at the scene recovered a 9mm pistol and a shell casing near where the victim lay dying.

Following the shooting, law enforcement focused their attention on a suspect who lived on the same block. Stanley Barge, a 31-year-old resident of the neighborhood, fled into a nearby home immediately after the incident. He initially refused to exit, leading to a brief standoff with authorities before eventually surrendering to police custody. Barge reportedly admitted to shooting Hunt but claimed the action was the result of a dispute between the two men. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

The case proceeded to trial the following year, amidst significant staffing challenges within the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office. In April 2023, the trial concluded with a jury returning a verdict of not guilty. Barge, who had argued that he acted in self-defense, was acquitted of the murder charge. The legal proceedings were noted for their turbulent nature, as the assistant circuit attorney trying the case was assigned only two days prior to jury selection due to the abrupt leave of absence taken by the originally assigned prosecutor.
