In an event that unfolded with grim finality, Town Marshal James Joshua Payne, a 56-year-old male, lost his life in the line of duty in Fairmount, Indiana. The incident occurred on November 26, 1903, after Marshal Payne arrested an ex-convict in connection with a burglary at a local store that had taken place the previous evening.
