James Joshua Payne, who served as the Town Marshal of Fairmount, Indiana, tragically lost his life on November 26, 1903. At the age of 56, Marshal Payne was fatally shot while performing his duties. The incident occurred after he had arrested an ex-convict for the burglary of a local store the previous evening.
