In the quiet city of Bloomington, Indiana, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a friendly gathering that took a devastating turn. Eighteen-year-old Anthony Andrews, a senior at Bloomington High School South, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 21, 2017. The incident, which occurred at a friend's home on South Camden Drive, was a result of what was later described as a reckless accident.
On that fateful day, Andrews was with his friend, 21-year-old Malik
Parker, and another 17-year-old. The group was reportedly using a potent marijuana concentrate known as 'shatter.' In a moment that would forever alter the course of their lives, Parker picked up a. 22 caliber rifle. Believing the firearm to be unloaded, he discharged the weapon, striking Andrews in the neck.
The immediate aftermath was a scene of shock and panic. Andrews stumbled a few steps before collapsing in a bathroom. A 911 call was made by the 17-year-old witness, but by the time emergency responders arrived at approximately 3:40 PM, it was too late to save the young man's life.
Law enforcement officers who responded to the scene took Malik Parker into custody. He was described as cooperative with the police and was transported to the Monroe County Correctional Center. Parker faced a preliminary charge of reckless homicide in connection with the death of his friend.
