In the early morning hours of June 7, 2020, in Bloomington, Indiana, a male named Michael T. Parker, 39, was shot and killed. The incident occurred at the Circle S gas station on North Walnut Street. Police were dispatched to the scene around 2:11 a.m. following a report of a person being shot. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Parker in the passenger seat of a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his neck.
Medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to identify a suspect, De Juan Lamar Kelley. An arrest warrant was issued for Kelley, charging him with murder and carrying a handgun without a license. Law enforcement officials cautioned the public that Kelley should be considered armed and dangerous and advised against approaching him. Following a tip, Kelley was located and apprehended on July 28, 2020, in Kansas City, Missouri, by members of the Kansas City Police Department's Fugitive Task Force. After a brief attempt to flee, he was taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Kelley was held in the Jackson County Jail in Kansas City before facing legal proceedings for the death of Parker. The charges brought against him included murder and attempted murder, in addition to the handgun violation. The case brought attention to the issue of gun violence in the community.
