It was the early hours of October 28, 2018, when 21-year-old Kemontie Johnson, a Black male from Indianapolis, was fatally shot at a crowded party held at the Eagle Pointe Golf Resort. The event, dubbed 'A Nightmare in B-Town,' was attended by hundreds of people, many of them Indiana University students.
The violence erupted
shortly after midnight, sending attendees scattering in panic. In the chaos, Johnson was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual was critically injured in the shooting. Despite the large number of potential witnesses, the investigation into Johnson's death was hampered by a lack of cooperation and conflicting descriptions of the shooter. In the immediate aftermath, only a handful of the estimated 200 to 300 partygoers remained to give statements to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.
Kemontie Johnson was not a student at Indiana University but was a well-known and loved member of the Bloomington community. A graduate of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, he was remembered as a talented football player. He was also an aspiring entrepreneur, running his own clothing company called Silent Hustle. His death sent shockwaves through the community, particularly affecting the university's Black student population.
To date, the case surrounding Kemontie Johnson's murder remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the investigation.
