On the evening of December 1, 2018, a tragic event unfolded in Denver, Colorado, leading to the death of 37-year-old Jacy Kadison-Marshall, a Black/African American male. The incident occurred in an apartment building located in the 1500 block of Filbert Court in the Park Hill neighborhood. Kadison-Marshall was fatally shot by Michael Anthony Pikes, who was 33 years old at the time.
Pikes himself initiated contact with law enforcement by calling 911 to report that he had shot
Kadison-Marshall, claiming it was an act of self-defense. However, after making the initial report, Pikes disconnected the call and proceeded to fire additional rounds at the victim. When Denver police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they discovered Pikes on a second-floor landing. He immediately directed them to his apartment, stating, 'Thank you for coming, I got him, I shot him and he is right there in my apartment room.' Inside, they found the wounded Kadison-Marshall. Despite the immediate medical attention and being transported to Denver Health Medical Center, he was pronounced deceased.
Michael Anthony Pikes was promptly arrested and charged with the murder of Jacy Kadison-Marshall. During the investigation, Pikes told authorities that he shot Kadison-Marshall because he believed the victim was armed. The case went to trial, and in March 2020, after eight hours of deliberation, a Denver jury rejected Pikes's claim of self-defense. They found him guilty of first-degree murder. His sentencing was scheduled for May 1, 2020.
