Town Marshal William Dean Miner Jr., aged 29, tragically lost his life on May 28, 1983, in Avilla, Indiana. Marshal Miner was responding to reports of vandalism at around 4:00 a.m. on Indiana 3 in Avilla when he encountered two men suspected of the crime. During the attempt to arrest them, a struggle ensued. One of the suspects managed to disarm Marshal Miner, seizing his handgun and subsequently shooting him in the back. The suspects fled the scene but were apprehended three days later.
