In the early morning hours of June 14, 1990, a promising young life was tragically cut short on a street in South Bend, Indiana. Adam Soto, a 20-year-old Caucasian male, had been enjoying an evening with friends and was in the process of leaving a house in the 600 block of West Lasalle Street. What began as a routine departure soon escalated into a fatal encounter that has haunted his loved ones for decades.
As Adam and his friends were outside, a light-colored, older model car with
distinctive rectangular taillights passed by. Inside the vehicle were two Black males, estimated to be in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties. An exchange of words took place between the men in the car and Adam's group. The brief verbal dispute seemed to be over until the car suddenly stopped and reversed. As Adam turned to face the vehicle, one of the occupants opened fire, striking him. The gunshot proved to be fatal, and Adam Soto was killed at the scene. One of his friends was also wounded in the sudden burst of violence.
In the immediate aftermath, an investigation was launched into Adam's murder. Law enforcement officials gathered descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle, but the trail quickly grew cold. Despite the passage of time, the case has remained unsolved, and no arrests have ever been made in connection with the senseless killing. Adam's family and the community have been left with lingering questions and the pain of an unresolved loss.
