Death by Force

Timothy Jacob "Jake" Laird, a 31-year-old officer with the Indianapolis Police Department, tragically lost his life on August 18, 2004. Officer Laird was responding to a call about a man walking in the 2700 block of Dietz Street with a rifle. The situation escalated quickly when the suspect began firing the rifle into the air. As Officer Laird arrived at the scene, he came under fire and was fatally wounded by a shot to the chest, which struck above his bullet-resistant vest.
