On December 16, 2013, the Indianapolis community was shaken by the tragic and untimely death of 31-year-old Timika Denae Jones-Fleming, a Black / African American mother and aspiring professional known for her dedication to her family and education. Residing in a home near the intersection of East 31st and North Gale streets, Timika was a woman of ambition who worked as a hair stylist while simultaneously furthering her academic qualifications.
She had earned an Information Technology degree from Harrison College and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Martin University. Her life was cut short in her own residence, leaving behind a grieving family that included her mother, siblings, and two young children who were present in the home at the time of the incident.
The grim discovery was made in the early morning hours of that Monday, around 6:30 a.m., by Timika's two children, an 11-year-old son and a 6-year-old sibling. The children found the lifeless bodies of their mother and her boyfriend, identified as Thomas Emery, inside the house. Authorities were immediately contacted, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived to secure the scene. Investigators determined that both individuals had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The presence of the children in the home during such a violent event added a layer of profound heartbreak to the case, though they were physically unharmed during the shooting.
As detectives pieced together the events that transpired overnight, the investigation concluded that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. Police identified Thomas Emery as the primary suspect in the death of Timika Jones-Fleming. It was revealed that Emery was the father of the younger child found at the scene. Evidence collected suggested that Emery shot Timika before turning the weapon on himself. Because the sole suspect died at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, trials, or convictions connected to the case. The legal closure of the investigation came with the determination that the person responsible had taken his own life, leaving the family to mourn without the possibility of courtroom justice.

Her obituary highlighted her academic achievements and her role as a provider for her son, Caleb Herron, and her child with Emery, Timyuh-Sianel. Following the investigation, services were held to honor her memory, with visitation and a Homegoing Celebration taking place at the Martindale Church of Christ later that month. She was laid to rest in Sutherland Park Cemetery, her legacy enduring through the children she left behind and the memories shared by her extended family and friends.
