Late on the night of Friday, June 20, 2025, a violent disturbance erupted in the 2400 block of North Kenyon Street on the east side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a person shot just before 11:30 p.m., arriving at a scene located near Arlington Avenue and East 21st Street.
Upon their arrival, first responders discovered a 32-year-old female, identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Shawna Renee Durst, lying in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel rushed her to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
While securing the scene, police located a second victim, a man identified as Durst's boyfriend, who had also sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition and survived the encounter. As detectives canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed witnesses, a narrative emerged suggesting the shooting stemmed from an escalating dispute between neighbors. Witnesses reported that an argument began over a basketball hoop and a ball repeatedly entering a neighbor's yard. Accounts indicated the situation intensified when the boyfriend confronted a child about the basketball, prompting Durst to intervene, which ultimately led to an exchange of gunfire between the parties involved.
In the days following the homicide, investigators established that they had identified all individuals involved in the altercation, yet no immediate arrests were made. Reports surfaced that the prosecutor’s office had not ruled out the possibility of self-defense claims being reviewed. The investigation remained open with homicide detectives appealing to the public for further information to clarify the sequence of events. The death of Shawna Renee Durst left a significant void in her family, as she was a mother to six children who were subsequently placed in the care of relatives.
