In the late hours of a Friday in Linton, Indiana, a series of events unfolded that would end in the death of 48-year-old James Jarman. On February 28, 2014, law enforcement officers from the Indiana State Police, Linton Police Department, and the Greene County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to a residence on J Street, Southwest, following reports of a man threatening to harm himself.
Upon their arrival just after 6 p.m., officers found James Jarman on the back porch of the home,
holding a handgun. A tense situation developed as police began to negotiate with Jarman, attempting to convince him to surrender his weapon. Despite their efforts, Jarman refused to relinquish the firearm.
The standoff escalated into a conflict during which shots were fired by both James Jarman and the responding officers. In the exchange of gunfire, Jarman was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, as it was not immediately clear whether the fatal shot was self-inflicted or fired by law enforcement. The Indiana State Police took charge of the investigation into the shooting. No arrests were reported in connection with the incident.
