In the spring of 2024, a dispute originating from a minor car accident tragically escalated, culminating in the death of Kylin Romaal Bursey, a 33-year-old Black male. The fatal encounter occurred on April 30, 2024, in the 4100 block of West 23rd Avenue in Gary, Indiana. Responding to a call about a possible shooting, police discovered Bursey in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later confirmed that Bursey died from at least six gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Bursey's death quickly led authorities to identify suspects. The incident was reportedly preceded by a minor traffic collision between Bursey and Angelia Nicole Cross. Following the accident, Angelia Cross met with family members, including her husband, Billy Antonio Cross Jr., and informed them of the other driver's, Bursey's, nearby location. Security footage captured Angelia Cross, Billy Cross, and another person arriving and yelling at Bursey. Angelia Cross was heard shouting, 'right there with the hat,' just before Billy Cross raised a handgun and fired multiple times, striking Bursey. Angelia Cross then drove her husband away from the scene.
On June 5, 2024, Billy Antonio Cross Jr. was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals' Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force and the Gary Police Department SWAT team. He was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a firearm, and two counts related to possessing and operating a machine gun. His wife, Angelia Nicole Cross, 48, of Portage, was also charged. In a plea agreement, she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder. On December 4, 2025, Angelia Nicole Cross was sentenced to 20 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for her role in the events that led to Kylin Bursey's death.
