In the early morning hours of March 14, 2014, the life of 24-year-old Simone Bush, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in the Michigan City, Indiana home she shared with her grandparents. An argument with her boyfriend, Brian Taylor, escalated to a fatal conclusion when a gun was discharged, striking Bush in the neck. Following the sound of a struggle from Bush's bedroom, she was found deceased.
Taylor fled the residence immediately after the shooting.
The investigation into Simone's death began swiftly. Accompanied by his grandfather, Brian Taylor later presented himself at the Michigan City police station. As authorities processed the scene at the house, they gathered evidence that suggested the firearm had been pressed against Simone's neck at the time it was fired. Taylor, who was 20 years old at the time, was subsequently arrested and charged with her murder.
The legal proceedings that followed were complex and protracted. During the initial trial, the defense put forth arguments that the shooting could have been an accident or even a suicide. The jury, unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulted in a mistrial. The path to justice was further complicated by a significant instance of misconduct when it was discovered that a LaPorte County Chief Deputy Prosecutor had eavesdropped on a private conversation between Taylor and his defense attorney. This led to the suspension of the prosecutor's law license.
Despite these setbacks, the case proceeded to a second trial. In 2018, a new jury found Brian Taylor guilty of the murder of Simone Bush. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 60 years in prison for his crime. The conviction brought a long-awaited resolution to a case marked by tragedy and legal turbulence, finally securing a measure of justice for Simone and her grieving community.
