In the early morning hours of August 15, 2024, the lives of 22-year-old Kiara Hootman and 35-year-old Travis Pennington were tragically cut short in Michigan City, Indiana. The two were discovered inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the Normandy Village Apartments, both having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The LaPorte County Coroner later confirmed that they were shot from outside the vehicle and ruled their deaths a homicide.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly
led police to a suspect: 26-year-old Armann Johnson, a resident of Michigan City. Evidence gathered over a 48-hour period, including interviews and search warrants, resulted in Johnson's arrest. He has since been charged with two counts of murder, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, unlawful carrying of a handgun, and criminal mischief.
The motive behind the killings appears to be revenge. Court documents revealed that Johnson had been in a brief and abusive relationship with Hootman. Fearing for her safety, Hootman had recently moved in with Pennington. All three individuals were coworkers at Hearthside Food Solutions, though Johnson and Pennington had recently been fired. Authorities believe Johnson, who is being held without bond, acted out of jealousy and anger. He had reportedly warned Pennington to stay away from Hootman. Hootman was being driven to her job by Pennington on the morning they were killed. She was also pregnant at the time of her death.
