Barbara Evans, a 71-year-old female, passed away in her Michigan City, Indiana, home where she was discovered on Monday, January 7, 2019. The circumstances of her death were part of a tragic and violent series of events that also claimed the life of her 73-year-old husband, Walter Evans. A relative who also resided in the home made the grim discovery and alerted the police.
Upon arriving at the residence in the 6800 block of Meer Road, law enforcement found three bodies.
The investigation that followed determined that Barbara and Walter Evans had been fatally shot by their 48-year-old daughter, Tammy Evans. Investigators believe that after killing her parents, Tammy remained in the house for several days before taking her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At the scene, police recovered a handgun, bullet casings, and a handwritten note. The note was found in a different area of the house from where Barbara and Walter's bodies were located. While the contents of the note have not been publicly disclosed, the evidence at the scene led investigators to conclude the case was a double murder-suicide orchestrated by Tammy Evans. As the sole suspect in the deaths of her parents, Tammy Evans's own death brought a close to the investigation, with no arrests made or charges pursued. The motive for the shootings was not released by authorities.
