The circumstances surrounding Sergio Del Alto's death were tragic. On the morning of March 28, 2022, officers arrived at a Stripes convenience store on Staples Street and Yorktown Boulevard around 5:40 a.m. and found Sergio Del Alto dead inside the store. An argument between two patrons escalated, leading to gunfire. The suspect, Anthony Whetstone, was arrested hours later at Everhart Road and SPID without incident. Whetstone was taken into custody on a murder warrant after police interviewed him and secured the warrant based on their findings.
Anthony Whetstone, the 27-year-old suspect, was found incompetent to stand trial and was sent for competency restoration. The facility he was sent to will try to get him mentally prepared for trial, but he must understand the charges against him. Whetstone's bond was set at $500,000, and he is currently being held at the City Detention Center. The investigation revealed that the argument between Whetstone and Del Alto escalated, leading to the fatal shooting.
Sergio Del Alto's common-law wife, Edna De La Garza Del Alto, spoke out about the incident, expressing her desire for justice. She recounted how she and Sergio had stopped at the convenience store to get transmission fluid for their truck. Edna stayed outside in the truck and did not hear the gunshots. She only learned of Sergio's death when the police informed her. Edna described Sergio as a great husband and someone who could make everyone laugh with his funny facial expressions. She emphasized her desire for justice for Sergio and the impact his death has had on her life.
