In what appears to have been a feud over a woman, 28-year-old Luis Walker-Carrion, a Black male, was shot and killed in East Chicago, Indiana. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of August 24, 2014. Walker-Carrion was with his girlfriend at his home in the 3700 block of Deodar Street when another man telephoned the woman.
An argument ensued over the phone between Walker-Carrion and the caller.
Following the heated exchange, Walker-Carrion reportedly went outside armed with a shotgun to confront the man. The confrontation in the alley near his home turned violent, and Walker-Carrion was fatally shot. He was transported to St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago, where he was pronounced dead at 5:11 a.m. The Lake County Coroner's office later classified his death as a homicide.
The alleged shooter, a 34-year-old man from nearby Whiting, Indiana, fled the scene after the incident. However, he was apprehended by police shortly after during a traffic stop and was taken into custody without incident. At the time of the arrest, the police chief noted that the case might involve a question of self-defense, a matter that would be presented to the prosecutor for review. Walker-Carrion was described as a proud Marine, a loving father, and a great friend who was outgoing, funny, and loved to dance and sing.
