In the late hours of a Sunday night in April 2015, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Gary, Indiana. Donald Fuzzell, a 21-year-old male from Calumet Park, Illinois, was shot and killed during what authorities described as a botched robbery. The incident unfolded on April 12, 2015, in the parking lot of a gas station located in the 2300 block of Broadway.
Fuzzell sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene just before midnight. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of four individuals. Authorities charged Dontrall Jer'i Phillips, Daidreon Sparks, Walter Rondo III, and Jimmie Caldwell in connection with the fatal shooting. According to court documents, the four had met and planned to commit a robbery, intending to split the proceeds to buy alcohol and marijuana. The plan went tragically wrong, resulting in the death of Donald Fuzzell.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, at least one of the accused faced justice for his role in the crime. Dontrall Jer'i Phillips, who was 19 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder. While ballistics evidence indicated that Phillips was not the one who fired the fatal shots, he admitted his involvement in the robbery that led to the homicide. In March 2021, a Lake County judge sentenced Phillips, an Iowa resident, to 45 years in prison for his part in the killing. The cases against the other three co-defendants were also set to proceed through the court system.
